History and Background
Alchemy came to Spain in the 8th Century.
In the 12th century of Spain, Medieval Spain was known as The Kingdom of Aragorn and there was constant warfare between the religions there. It was a horrible time for all residents, many died or had to flee.
Ulyssa lost both her parents in this warfare and became a street orphan, begging for money. She was often yelled at by passerbys or ignored completely.
One day a man passed by and Ulyssa asked him for food. He said nothing to her. Desperate for food, she explained her story to him, and he took pity on her and offered her a place to stay. Ulyssa happily agreed, and followed the man away from town and into the secluded woods where he lived in a shack. Looking around she noticed many metals, liquids and books, curious she asked the man about them. He explained to her that he was an Alchemist who studied the spiritual link between all nature, in attempts to understand and control it.
The Alchemist would not give his name out to Ulyssa no matter how many times she guessed. The man became a father to her, teaching her all the ways of alchemy. He was a daughter to the man too, the life of Alchemy had made his secluded away from everyone, and he was sure his family passed a long time ago.
He taught her about the importance of metals and their connection to the planets, he taught her of the life force of everything around, from the smallest of rocks to the largest of animals. Everything was connected, and everything was alive. He told her about the great project all alchemist work towards ‘The Elixir of Life’, with it you can have immortality, it was the key to living for as long as you wish.
Ulyssa worked on many potions with the old man, learning the basics of ingredients, metals and spells, and although she was a quick learner, she often made mistakes. Once, while trying to conjure a potion for making plants grow faster, Ulyssa added too much Mercury, causing a mini explosion which caused her hair to go pink, as well as the Alchemist. He was talented however and fixed the mistake on himself, and while Ulyssa tried to reverse it herself, she ended up giving up, taking a fondness to the unique color.
She spent almost a year with the Alchemist as his apprentice, and she would often run errands for him and gather supplies in town. Ulyssa hated that task however, because whenever she entered town she was yelled at, called names, and often denied purchases for who she was, living in the woods with the ‘strange hermit.’ The coldness she had experienced both when she was an orphan and at this time was where her dislike for humans began.
When she was 9, the Alchemist told her she was gifted in the ways of Alchemy but now needed to continue her studies on her own in order to grasp the full understanding of alchemy. Reluctantly, she complied, saying her goodbyes to the man, knowing she may never see him again. From this point on she traveled the world under the name ‘Oracle’ practicing her alchemy in secluded areas. When she was 13, she discovered the ‘Elixir of life’ and has used it since, giving her the child-like appearance. She now resides in the mountains near Bluebell, creating potions and researching more about Alchemy. Although she shows herself to hate all humans, she secretly misses the company of others, but is scared of being rejected by them for her odd appearance and lifestyle.
